SLP115 - Welcome To The All-New Strategic Leader Podcast
Wednesday Jan 15, 2020
Wednesday Jan 15, 2020
Welcome, everyone! As you can see, this is our new and improved podcast! We’re delighted to have you along with us on this journey.
We’re gathering emerging leaders together in this great community, and placing our focus on personal and leadership development.
I am especially excited about today’s program, as it is our inaugural episode under our new focus. Let’s get started today, talking about Strategic Leadership!
Why the shift in focus and branding?
- Over the last several months, I’ve realized the way I can make the greatest impact is to pour into other leaders. In part, this is due to my own deep conviction that every problem we face in our world has been created by, and can be solved by, leadership.
- Our world is a host of significant challenges in almost every area of society: families, governments, businesses, financial systems, religions, prejudices, etc.
- In direct contrast to that, I’m encouraged to talk all over the world and hear a genuine, sincere desire to pursue NEW ideas, NEW paths, and NEW methods for leading our nations to a NEW light. This has happened because of one reason … Leadership!
What does it mean, to be a “strategic leader”?
- To quote John Maxwell … “Leaders lead.”
- Leaders influence people
- Leaders influence policy
- Leaders influence thinking
- Leaders influence culture
What if I’m not a leader?
You can choose to do what most do: graduate, get a good job, pay the bills, die…
OR
You can choose to break free of the status quo, discover your leadership potential, and be the leader who changes your world.
7 Areas Strategic Leaders Are Desperately Needed:
- Personal Leadership
- Family Leadership
- Business/Marketplace Leadership
- Church/Spiritual Leadership
- Classroom/Educational Leadership
- Community Leadership
- Political Leadership
Why should leadership be a front-of-mind focus for me in the new year?
It begins with you!
Closing Thoughts:
- Nothing changes until something changes.
- Status quo is not acceptable anymore.
- What if you could uncover your REAL leadership potential, and make a REAL difference in the world?

We live in a very self-centered and selfish culture. Very few people are as concerned about others as they are about themselves. I know we can only give what we have, and therefore we must take care to be healthy, prosperous, and well put together. However, nowadays it seems we’ve all but forgotten what it means to live our lives in the service of others.
On this episode, I want to talk about Developing a Heart of Giving: 10 Ways You Can Serve Others and Make A Difference.
1. Slow Down & Pay Attention
- There are needs all around you every day.
- There are people who simply need a smile, a hello, a warm hug, or a helping hand.
- Take a deep breath, slow down, and develop a discipline of awareness.
2. Extend a Kind Gesture
- Open the door for someone.
- Help someone with their luggage as they board a plane.
- Pat someone on the back.
- Tell someone to have a wonderful day.
- Say, “Thank you!”
3. Share a Compliment or Word of Affirmation
- Tell the store clerk what a great job they’re doing.
- Better yet, ask them to call their manager over, and compliment them in front of their manager.
- Tell your employees when they do good.
4. Buy Someone’s Meal, Coffee, or Even Their Groceries
5. Clean House & Give All the STUFF You Don’t Need or Wear to the Salvation Army or Other Agency
- Every one of us has 10 times what we need in our closet.
- Coats, pants, shirts, blouses, dresses, shoes.
- There are many legitimate and worthy charities that take our unnecessary belongings and help others with them.
6. Give Money to Someone In Need
- Be led by the Holy Spirit or listen to your inner voice.
- Sponsor a child (Compassion International, World Vision, Samaritans Purse).
- Wounded Warrior Project
7. Sponsor a Family For The Holidays
- We really don’t NEED anything, so why not:
- Buy groceries and gifts for a family who is less fortunate than yours.
- Make this a tradition and do for someone else BEFORE you do for your own.
8. Act of Service
- Serving the homeless
- Ministering to and helping pregnant teens
- Visiting the elderly and shut-in
- Sending gifts to our servicemen and servicewomen
- Volunteering for charities and agencies
9. Just Being There For Friends In Need
- Taking time to visit and listen
- Sacrificing your social time for valuable relationships
- Re-arranging your life to be available for others
10. Be Purposeful & Intentional About Developing YOUR Attitude of Giving
- Ask . . . . How can I serve someone today?
- Look . . . For opportunities to do good.
- Listen . . For moments to speak an encouraging word.
- Lead . . . By doing what others are not willing to do.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
- How can you be intentional about developing a heart of giving today?

John Lee Dumas: “Fire Nation, we all have a history. We all have a journey. And unfortunately a lot of us keep that, the more difficult parts of our journey in our subconscious. We kind of bury it. We don’t like to think about it. Don’t like to pull it out. But the reality is it will always be a part of us. So, Brian, kind of break this down for us. What do you really want to make sure our listeners get throughout the story that you’re sharing right now?”

SLP110 - Fearless and Forward : Three Kinds of Fear and How to Overcome Them
Tuesday Jan 14, 2020
Tuesday Jan 14, 2020
One hindrance to moving forward that often crops up is an internal dialogue laced with pessimism, fear, and the unknown. No doubt, you’re aware of the tragic situation unfolding in Europe and the Middle East this past week, where radical extremists took the lives of hundreds of people. Of course, our thoughts and prayers are poured out over everyone affected by these tragic events.
When events like this happen, it can fan the flame of fear, especially of the unknown. I don’t believe we were created to live in a state of constant fear, however. This week, I want to unpack some deep, thoughtful points about Fearless & Forward: 3 Kind of Fear & How to Overcome Them.
The definition of fear:
An unpleasant often strong emotion, caused by anticipation or awareness of danger; An instance of this emotion; A state marked by this emotion; Anxious concern; Reason for alarm.
1. The Fear of Man:
- The opinions of others
- Perceived status or lack thereof
- Loss of approval
- Loss of love
- Performance/reward (am I good enough to impress?)
- Fear of enemies or opposition (go along to get along)
- Fear of rejection
- Fear of job loss/financial ruin
- People pleasing vs. God pleasing
2. Fear of Risk:
- Success and fulfillment ONLY comes to those who are willing to risk the present for the sake of a better future.
- The best things in life come to those who look risk and even failure in the eye, and DO IT anyway.
- Fear of risk (and failure) will cheat you out of the joy and success of what COULD BE and lock you into the WHAT IS.
3. Fear of Failure:
- Someone once said “Failure is not an option.” Yes, it is!
- If you try and fail, at least you tried.
- Subjecting yourself to fear of failure (or fear of risk) will lock you into the present and keep you from having what God has determined in His own mind he wants you to have.
Fear stifles our thinking and actions. It creates indecisiveness that results in stagnation. I have known talented people who procrastinate indefinitely rather than risk failure. Lost opportunities cause erosion of confidence, and the downward spiral begins. ~ Charles Stanley
Pitiful is the person who is afraid of taking risks. Perhaps this person will never be disappointed or disillusioned; perhaps she won’t suffer the way people do when they have a dream to follow. But when that person looks back – and at some point everyone looks back – she will hear her heart saying, “What have you done with the miracles that God planted in your days? What have you done with the talents God bestowed on you? You buried yourself in a cave because you were fearful of losing those talents. So this is your heritage; the certainty that you wasted your life. ~ Paul Coelho
If we listened to our intellect, we’d never have a love affair. We’d never have a friendship. We’d never go into business, because we’d be cynical. Well, that’s nonsense. You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down. ~Ray Bradbury
Questions to Ask Yourself:
- What are your dreams?
- What has God called you to accomplish or do? What business, relationship, job, book?

Last week we talked about the importance of Taking An Honest Look at where you are, and where you’re going.
This week, I want to continue in this vein and consider how we can best prepare for entering into a new season; even shifting our heart and mind toward the new opportunities that lie ahead. Dive in as we talk about Experiencing the Shift: 7 Things You Can Do to Prepare For a New Beginning.
What does it mean, to experience the shift? We’re talking about preparing to enter into a new season, and embrace the opportunities it presents. What’s next? What’s coming ahead? The shift in your heart, mind, and thinking can shift the course of your upcoming year. Confidently pursue the interests and passions you have, and place strategic goals around those interests and passions, by experiencing the shift.
The Process of Evaluating Life:
- Why am I here?
- What is my destiny and my calling?
- Is what I am doing making a difference?
- Am I doing what I was created to do?
- Am I happy doing what I am doing?
- Am I satisfied with the results I’m seeing in my life, year to year?
7 Things You Can Do To Prepare For a New Beginning:
- Embrace the possibilities (the Word of God about you)
If you can think it, you can do it. If you can dream it, you can have it. God has tremendous, beautiful, successful plans for your life. - Close out old accounts
If there are unresolved issues, or if you’re carrying negative balances forward, close the account. - Forget the past
You cannot engage this shift or a new day, if you are stuck in an old account, old deficit, or old experience. - Revisit – OR – Reimagine your dreams
Go back and dust your dreams off. Remember your passions and interests, without filters. Write down what you see. - Change your thinking
Go after the limiting beliefs (lies) and reprogram (renew) your mind. What do you hold as beliefs that are holding you back from realizing truths? - Align yourself with like-minded people
Be intentional about letting some relationships go. Be specific about aligning yourself with like-minded people, who will challenge your perspective. Master mind groups are a great example. - Develop, write, and execute the vision
Take the time to write your dream out, break it into meaningful steps and goals, so you can execute your plan.
Questions to Ask Yourself:
- What old accounts do you need to close out as you approach a new year?
- What possibilities await you?
- What dreams do you need to re-visit or awaken?
- What beliefs do you presently hold that may stand in the way of you realizing the SHIFT?
- What about your relationships?

One of the most important ways we can ensure a better future, is to periodically “look back” and honestly evaluate our progress, performance, and personal mindset.
Every great leader, in sports, business, etc. that I know, takes time – especially during this time of year – to consider their mental state, progress as it relates to their goals, and their clarity concerning the way forward.
If you want to live strategically, you must be intentional about looking honestly at where you are, where you’ve been, and where you’re going. Today, I want to do just that as we talk about Taking An Honest Look: Questions and Considerations for Evaluating Your Year.
1. Begin By Reviewing Your Goals & Dreams for 2015:
- Did you meet your goals?
- Did you exceed your goals?
- Did you fall short of your goals?
- Why?
- Were your goals realistic?
- Were your goals in line with your purpose and calling?
- Will you carry these same goals forward in 2016?
2. Consider Your Year:
- Were there unexpected events that took you off point?
- How did you handle those?
- Were you able to recover and regroup?
- If not, what could you have done differently?

- What is your dominant self-talk like?
- Are there any beliefs that have popped up this year that have limited your forward progress? If yes, what are they? List them!
6. How Did You Do With Priorities And Time Management?
- Which (regular) activities produced the greatest results?
- Which activities kept you busy but produced no results?
- What did you say YES to that you should have said NO to?
- What were your biggest time wasters in 2015?
- What adjustments need to be made in these areas?
7. Did You Follow A Personal Development Plan?

10. If You Could Go Back to January 1, 2015, And Could Change ONE Thing About This Year, What Would It Be?
